Meshed Remote Operation as the Default Mode: From Technical Challenge to Society Opportunnities

Abstract This paper describes the choice of Flemish waterway authority – De Vlaamse Waterweg for a new vision on remote operation its inland infrastructure. From now on, control is default mode. As 2019, was approved to remotely all our movable structures (ca.330) by 2032 from 3 centres. The innovative aspect that they will function as fully interconnected meshed network and can be used back-up each other. At first glance this may seem purely technical challenge. It however shown pursuing goal, it compels us rethink large parts organisation in regards with change management, business processes, roles responsibilities, training management. same time, we see society opportunities revealing themselves. aimed at sharing experiences call-to action other authorities, academic institutions private companies help envision built future waterway-systems.
